We have been in Karratha for 2 1/2 years now and this has been the first real cyclone season that we have experienced. Cyclone Bianca was our first cyclone, and just recently it was Cyclone Carlos.
Before cyclone Carlos formed Karratha experienced a mini Tornado that ripped through the town centre damaging quite a few cars, throwing air conditioners from houses and shopping centres, and ripping trees from their roots. Here is some video footage of the tornado and the impact it had around town.
I was out jogging when the yellow alert was raised and as I jogged by the school I noticed parents were picking up their kids so I ducked in to see what was going on. I decided to take the kids home just to be on the safe side. The buses at St Luke’s turned up early so Ammon was able to make his way home on his own. The cyclone seemed to take forever to arrive, and in the end, it wasn’t until the next day that afternoon that we felt the full impact of it. It wasn’t too bad, only a category 2 so the kids went outside and played in the rain which I didn’t mind in the least because they were starting to get itchy feet being cooped up inside all day. I needed a break too!

Why not build a cubby to kill time?

Hmmm, should I go out for some more?

The full force of cyclone Carlos was on Tuesday afternoon and was over within a few hours. The kids had the day off school on Wednesday to ensure all school buildings were safe to occupy. It looks like there is yet another cyclone brewing up North so I'm sure the kids will be delighted to know that in the near future they will have a few more days off school!
On a sadder note, while we were experiencing a mild cyclone and tornado, our brothers and sisters from Christchurch experienced their worst earthquake to date. So far, they have recovered 98 deceased people and around 300 are still missing. Our thoughts and prayers extend to all of our kiwi friends and their families who are affected by this devastating natural disaster :(
